A Museum with history<\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Museum of Sacred Art was founded in 1961.<\/p>\n

Its aim was – and still is – to conserve, restore, study and disseminate the religious heritage of the Diocese of Bilbao.<\/p>\n

It has a permanent exhibition of more than 500 pieces, although it also has an extensive and growing collection of works of art from the churches of Bizkaia and private donations.<\/p>\n

The Museum also takes care of all the works of art scattered throughout Biscay. Restorations, changes of location of pieces, transformations of spaces… are managed from the Museum. An instrument for the conservation of our cultural heritage.<\/p>\n

The building<\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Museum is located in the convent of La Encarnaci\u00f3n. Founded in 1514 by Dominican nuns, it was the first women\u2019s convent in Bilbao.<\/p>\n

Its austere facade belies the relaxing interior cloister from which the exhibition rooms are accessed.<\/p>\n

It forms part of the convent complex together with the adjoining church, and its facilities have been used for various purposes (teaching centre, barracks, hospital…), until its conversion in 1995 into the Bilbao Museum of Sacred Art.<\/p>\n

The collection<\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n

A journey through the art of Bizkaia through more than 500 pieces: sculpture, painting, gold and silver work, vestments… From the Romanesque period to the present day,<\/p>\n

Works of art that were made in Bizkaia, or outside it but destined for its temples.<\/p>\n

It is the most important collection of art specifically from Bizkaia.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On the other hand, these works of art were made expressly for the purpose of serving the Christian liturgy. In other words, they are the most important manifestation of the faith of the people of Biscay over eight centuries.<\/p>\n

And this allows us to get closer to the mentality of other times. Through the evolution of forms and tastes, the greater or lesser presence of one or other typologies and one or other iconographies… we can also follow the pulse of the people.<\/p>\n

Tablas catalanas<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Por un momento he cre\u00eddo estar en un museo de mi Catalu\u00f1a ante unas tablas de Bernat Martorell. C\u00f3mo le gustaban las escenas con mucha gente abrigarrada y en movimiento. Y creando volumen con esos oros y platas en relieve. Unas joyitas.<\/em><\/p>\n

Jordanes<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Un museo peque\u00f1o, escondido\u2026 y me encuentro con catorce maravillosos cuadros de mi admirado Luca Giordano. Lo m\u00e1s.<\/em><\/p>\n

Una colecci\u00f3n de obras de Giordano con el ciclo de la vida y la pasi\u00f3n de Cristo y al final una dram\u00e1tica Magdalena penitente (m\u00e1s desnuda de lo habitual). Pero con el virtuosismo de siempre en las obras de Fa presto.

Siempre hab\u00eda visto esta escena como algo muy solemne. Pero aqu\u00ed es algo cercano, humano. La Anunciaci\u00f3n de Urrutia<\/strong><\/h3>\n

La anunciaci\u00f3n ambientada en un paisaje vasco, con una Virgen que parece que acaba de salir del caser\u00edo. Una delicia de composici\u00f3n y de color. Y como remate una oraci\u00f3n en euskera en 1931. La Anunciaci\u00f3n de Urrutia<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Me cuentan que la oraci\u00f3n en euskera fue tapada tras la guerra civil, por miedo a la represi\u00f3n franquista, y que hace algunos a\u00f1os los restauradores pudieron recuperarla.
